Retired soldiers are not afraid to fight against the epidemic. Zheng Tao from Group 16 of our MHA Program.



Zheng Tao, vice president of the Shanghai Tongren Hospital, is a military cadre who is responsible for many duties as hospital finance, medical insurance, infrastructure as well as general affairs and security work.


During the epidemic, through hard work and perseverance worked hard to find the hidden dangers. He provided a strong logistics support and insisted on the importance of practical actions.

Zheng was one of the first retired soldiers of the Changning District to be selected as "Advanced security worker" by the Shanghai Public Security Bureau.


The sudden outbreak of the COVID-19 occurred while the hospital was under ward reconstruction. In order to complete the project as soon as possible, Zheng led the logistics team. This task involved the whole staff, from the Department Director to the nurses, everyone cooperated to complete the project.


During the Spring Festival, there was an expectable shortage of workforce. Zheng coordinated the construction with the existing personnel. Fever clinic facilities were completed and the waiting time of patients was shortened. The isolated fever ward of the fever clinic has 24 independent wards, which was always full during the epidemic.

Apart from these tasks, Zheng Tao took care of the medical staff who were struggling on the frontline and provided them a comfortable area to ensure their rest quality.

In addition, Zheng trained more than 300 health professionals. The training included safety measures as the seven-step washing method and the wearing of protective equipment.

Disinfection and medical waste disposal were also arrangements done by Zheng Tao. The staff disinfected public facilities of the hospital such as elevators, corridors, garbage dumps, garages, and outdoor public areas, which were cleaned once every two hours.

Zheng Tao said: "I used to be a soldier, and as one of them I watched many doctors rush to the frontline of the epidemic, joining the combat team without any recklessness. What I did was really insignificant compared to what they did. I firmly believe that we can overcome the epidemic. The spring will come soon!.
