Hardships are blessings in disguise. Li Qiao from Group 16 of our MHA program

Li Qiao, director of the Business Department of the Chinese Medicine Hospital in Jieshou City and Deputy Chief Physician of the Department of Respiratory Medicine, has been awarded the second prize of the Anhui Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, second prize of the Fuyang City Science and Technology Progress Award and the third prize of the Fuyang Good People Award. He is a fine example of the Chinese idiom 好人好事, which can be translated as fine good people and good things.

The diary Li Qiao wrote during the epidemic revealed his extraordinary courage and perseverance. The following is part of his writings:

On January 15, I received a notice from the Health and Welfare Commission for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of the epidemic infections caused by the SARS-CoV-2.

On January 18, a leading group for the prevention and control of coronavirus outbreaks was established in the Jieshou City Chinese Medicine Hospital. I acted as the vice-director of the leading group and director of the expert group. I was in charge of the prevention and control work and the establishment of a new fever clinic.

On January 19, the Fuyang City Health Commission sent experts to supervise the outbreaks in all counties and districts of the city. They found out that there were problems in some TCM hospitals, these problems were rectified that night.

On January 22, the key department of the Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine took part in a video conference organized by the National Health Commission. After the meeting, we rushed to the Zhuji Health Center and the Shuzhuang Health Center to continue our supervision work.

On January 24 (New Year´s Eve), a meeting was organized. Since I was appointed as the deputy team leader, I am on 24-hour administrative duty.

On January 27, medical staff participated in an awareness training of the new coronavirus diagnosis and treatment program. I was appointed as a member of the expert group of Chinese Medicine of Fuyang City.

In the 11 days from January 23 to February 2, Li Qiao has not left the hospital. He has been fighting with his colleagues on the front line of the clinic, organizing training sessions for the medical community day and night. But those were not his only duties, he also consulted patients and wrote case reports. He gave every patient a thermometer, a pen, and a piece of paper and told them to measure their body temperature every two hours and send it to the nurses through WeChat. He conducted video rounds to minimize unnecessary contact.

“Hardships are blessings in disguise. If the country is in trouble, everyone is responsible. In front of the plague, you must show who you are”, said Li Qiao.
