A psychological counselor in the frontline – Chen Biao from Group 25 of our MHA program

On February 15th, the Heilongjiang province sent medical staff to support the local teams who are working with more than 200 patients diagnosed with the COVID-19.

In addition to his rigorous work at the ward, Chen Biao also established a WeChat group for doctors and patients. The atmosphere in the group is quite good despite the situation, and everyone assists the rescue work.

“Before our team set off, some of our youngest members were afraid. So, I worked with the psychiatrist of Hospital Number 3 of Daqing City to assist the team members. The results were excellent so far. After two days working here, I felt that the patients are very lonely in the ward, and the psychological pressure they have is enormous”, said Zhang Liang, director of the Daqing Chengfeng Hospital and leader of the Anlu medical team. He discussed with the vice leader Xia Lina and both decided to provide psychological counseling to the patients.

Chen Biao was glad to receive the request for his support. In the above-mentioned WeChat group, he provided psychological counseling to both patients and medical staff.

Several activities as origami and painting were organized within the group. Chen also sent some videos with tips for the patients instead of giving them articles that can be long and difficult to understand. Chen worked restlessly to improve the patient’s confidence. He took different approaches with every patient.

Apart from Chen Bo, the Heilongjiang province also sent five psychological experts to the frontline. We hope a pleasant atmosphere and proper medical treatment could help patients to eliminate their physical and mental traumas.
